Earlier this month, Tito’s was warning drinkers that its vodka wouldn’t be an effective hand sanitizer to combat coronavirus, because the liquor is only 40% alcohol and sanitizer needs to be 60%. But the dream of a vodka hand sanitizer was not far from being realized.
On Sunday, Tito’s announced that it would transform its distillery into a sanitizer production facility, filling a huge need as the country faces a shortage amid the pandemic.
While we advise that you cannot use our vodka as a hand sanitizer, our distillery has been working hard to get all of the pieces in place to begin production on 24 tons of hand sanitizer that adheres to industry and governmental guidance. “Currently, we are testing our formula, procuring necessary components of supplies and packaging, and preparing for production as we wait for the additional required ingredients to be delivered to the distillery,” the company said in a statement.
In pivoting to sanitizer, Tito’s joins several other liquor companies both local and major, including Pernod Ricard USA, which oversees Absolut Vodka and Kahlua. Given the reliance this industry has on bars, it’s in their best interests to help the coronavirus threat pass quickly, so customers can return to going out and getting drunk.
