Xpeng reveals its next attack on the Tesla Model Y

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand Xpeng is launching a new SUV this year, the G7, to take on the Tesla Model Y.

Technically, Xpeng already has a mid-sized electric SUV, the G6 which it launched here with later last year.

However, the new Xpeng G7 will be priced right up against the Model Y in China with Xpeng referring to it as being “maybe the most powerful SUV in the 250,000 [RMB] level this year”.

For context, the Model Y range opens there at RMB 249,900 (~A$55,000), while the G6 starts at RMB 199,900 (~A$44,000).

Beyond confirming the G7’s price point, Xpeng has said little else about the new SUV other than to confirm it’s a “space monster [that’s] definitely the first choice for family users” and has “full AI configuration and leading technology”.

Like the G6, it has a slim full-width lighting assembly up front, as well as gently curved shoulders.

It has a lower, sleeker body design however, as well as separate lighting clusters up front plus similar to the P7+ liftback; the tail lights also closely resemble those of Xpeng’s flagship passenger car.

Xpeng is one of a slew of new Chinese brands to the Australian market.

Its Australian distributor TrueEV confirmed last month that its first customers had taken delivery of their G6s, with more supply to reach our market early this year.

It also said it aimed to have four retail locations open by the end of 2024, with another 20 due by the end of 2025 in “strategically positioned” sites positioned “to provide maximum accessibility”.

The G6 range opens at $54,800 before on-road costs for the Standard Range, undercutting the base Model Y RWD at $55,900 before on-roads.
