Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia on Thursday, 25 August, filed a fresh nomination for the post of president ahead of the AIFF Elections that are scheduled to be held on September 2. The Indian footballing legend had filed a nomination earlier as well, when the Committee of Administrators were in charge. However, the Supreme Court disbanded the interim committee and handed the AIFF their daily proceedings after forming the new constitution.
The Indian footballing body is expected to hold their elections for several positions and ensure the smooth running the body. The AIFF have set a date of 2 September to hold their elections and the results are expected to come out on the same day or on 3 September.
Speaking about his nomination, Bhutia had earlier said that the former footballers need to change the mentality that they could not run the footballing operations of this country. He had urged the former players to join the state associations and work towards the development of football.
Bhaichung is expected to be one of the favourites for the post of the president of the AIFF. He will be taking over from Praful Patel, who was ousted by the Supreme Court after failing to hold elections over a long period of time. India copped a FIFA ban over the same issue, which meant that none of the Indian teams could take part in the continental competitions.
