Ostracised in death: No one at Odisha male’s funeral service over autopsy by ‘low caste’ physician

The body of a male needed to be continued a bike for cremation after his loved ones declined to go to the funeral service, fearing being ostracised because an autopsy was carried out by a medical professional from a lower caste. The occurrence was reported from Odisha’s Bargarh district.

Muchunu Sandha, a day-to-day wager, was experiencing a liver condition. As his health aggravated, he was moved to a personal healthcare facility. He passed away throughout treatment there, following which an autopsy was carried out on him. His body was required to his native town in an ambulance on Friday.

In the town, Muchunu’s body lay inside his house as his pregnant spouse, three-year-old child and his mom relaxed it, sobbing. Nobody from his town, nor his loved ones, showed up for the last rites. This is when Sunil Behera, the other half of the gram panchayat sarpanch, chose to bring the body for cremation on his bike.

Sunil had actually assisted gather cash to spend for the ambulance which brought Muchunu’s body to the town from the medical facility.

Talking to India Today Television, Sunil Behera stated, “He was weak for a long period of time. He passed away at the health center while being moved to the emergency situation ward. We gathered around Rs 8,000 and spent for the ambulance.”

However, Sunil averted concerns about ostracism and stated the town has a guideline. “Villagers are dissatisfied about the autopsy. They do not come for the last rites of those on whom autopsies are done. As the household has no male members, I needed to take the body to the crematorium on my bike,” he stated.
