NFL roundup: Backup PJ Walker leads Browns to shock win over 49ers

Rookie Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal with six seconds left, leaving San Francisco stunned 19-17 by the Cleveland Browns, who ended the 49ers’ regular-season winning streak at 15 on Sunday and handed quarterback Brock Purdy his first loss as an NFL starter.

Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals for the Browns (3-2) – the last with 1:40 left, capping a drive helped by a disputed unnecessary roughness call against San Francisco (5-1). Cleveland pulled off the league’s biggest upset this season without quarterback Deshaun Watson, who missed his second straight game with a bruised shoulder.

The 49ers came in looking nearly unbeatable after destroying Dallas 42-10 at home last week. But Cleveland’s defense was up to the task, and the 49ers were short-handed without playmakers Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, who both went off with injuries.

PJ Walker came off Cleveland’s practice squad and outplayed Purdy, who threw his first interception this season and finished with just 125 yards.

The 23-year-old Purdy had won his first 10 starts and nearly pulled out a comeback. He drove the 49ers into field-goal range in the final seconds before Moody pushed his attempt to the right. When the ball sailed into the net, Cleveland’s sideline erupted in celebration and Browns fans danced in the aisles.

Purdy was just 12 of 27 for 125 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles 14–20 New York JetsBreece Hall ran for an eight-yard touchdown with 1:46 remaining, one play after Tony Adams intercepted Jalen Hurts, and the New York Jets held on to shock the previously undefeated Philadelphia Eagles. The Jets appeared on their way to falling to 0-13 in their history against the Eagles, but Hurts’ third interception of the game – and the fourth turnover by Philadelphia – was returned by Adams 45 yards to put New York into immediate scoring position. After Hall’s run shook MetLife Stadium as the Jets fans went wild, Zach Wilson connected with Randall Cobb on a two-point conversion. The defense shut down the Eagles one more time to seal the win.

Carolina Panthers 21–42 Miami DolphinsTua Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers and sparked the Miami Dolphins (5-1) to a comeback victory over the winless Carolina Panthers. Tagovailoa was 21 of 31 for 262 yards and has an NFL-leading 1,876 yards passing this season. After Miami fell into an early 14-point hole, Tyreek Hill flipped the lead back in the Dolphins’ favor with a 41-yard touchdown catch late in the second quarter.

Seattle Seahawks 13-17 Cincinnati BengalsJoe Burrow threw two early touchdown passes and Cincinnati (3-3) intercepted Geno Smith twice in the second half as the Bengals held off the Seattle Seahawks (3-2) late to get their second win a row. The Bengals defense stopped Seattle in the red zone twice late to seal the win, the final time when Smith was hit by BJ Hill and threw incomplete on fourth-and-eight at the Bengals’ nine-yard line in the final minute.

New England Patriots 14–20 Las Vegas RaidersBrian Hoyer relieved an injured Jimmy Garoppolo to throw for 102 yards in the second half, and Daniel Carlson made four field goals as Las Vegas handed the reeling New England Patriots another loss. Garoppolo played the entire first half before being ruled out with a back injury. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 162 yards with a touchdown and interception. The Raiders have won back-to-back games to move to .500 at 3-3. The Patriots have slumped to 1-5 and are bottom of the AFC East.

Detroit Lions 20–6 Tampa Bay BuccaneersJared Goff threw for 353 yards and two touchdowns and the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2). The streaking Lions won their fourth straight game following an overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks and are off to a 5-1 start for the first time since 2011. Goff tossed TD passes of 27 yards to Amon-Ra St Brown and 45 yards to Jameson Williams, converting on third-and-13 in one instance and third-and-10 on the other. Detroit won for the seventh time in eight road games dating to last season. The Bucs’ Baker Mayfield was 19 of 37 for 206 yards and one interception.

Arizona Cardinals 9–26 Los Angeles RamsCooper Kupp made seven receptions for 148 yards and his first touchdown of the season, and Kyren Williams rushed for a career-high 158 yards and a touchdown in the Los Angeles Rams’ victory over the Arizona Cardinals (1-5). Matthew Stafford passed for 226 yards for the Rams (3-3), who scored 23 unanswered points to pull away from their NFC West rivals for their first home victory of the season. Joshua Dobbs passed for 235 yards for the Cardinals, who lost their third straight. Arizona led 9-6 at halftime, but Dobbs threw a red-zone interception and fumbled on a sack during the second half.

New Orleans Saints 13–20 Houston TexansRookie CJ Stroud threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns and the Houston Texans got two defensive stops late to hold on for a 20-13 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The Saints trailed by seven when Derek Carr threw a 51-yard pass to Rashid Shaheed to get them to the Houston 35. Five consecutive runs by Alvin Kamara got them to the 14. But Carr’s pass to Kamara on fourth-and-four was short to give Houston the ball back with just under five minutes to go. Houston couldn’t move the ball after that and punted it back. New Orleans got to the Houston 24 on the next drive, but Carr’s throw on fourth-and-10 was intercepted by Steven Nelson with 21 seconds left to secure the win. The result leaves both teams at 3-3.

Indianapolis Colts 20-37 Jacksonville JaguarsTrevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes, Travis Etienne ran for a pair of scores and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Indianapolis for their third consecutive victory. It was the Colts’ ninth straight road loss in the series. Coming off back-to-back victories overseas, the Jaguars (4-2) spent all week hoping to avoid a London hangover. They responded with their most lopsided victory of the season. The Colts (3-3) had hoped to end a head-scratching road skid against Jacksonville that started in 2015. But Gardner Minshew, getting the start in place of injured rookie Anthony Richardson, turned the ball over four times in his return to Jacksonville.

Minnesota Vikings 19–13 Chicago BearsKirk Cousins threw for a touchdown, Jordan Hicks returned a fumble 42 yards for a score and the Minnesota Vikings (2-4) knocked Justin Fields out of the game. The Vikings made enough plays without injured star receiver Justin Jefferson to shake off a loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs and win for the second time in three games. Fields was sacked four times and exited with a right hand injury early in the third quarter, and the Bears (1-5) lost again after stopping a 14-game slide at Washington last week.

Baltimore Ravens 24–16 Tennessee TitansLamar Jackson threw a touchdown pass and Justin Tucker kicked six field goals to lead the Baltimore Ravens (4-2) to victory over the Tennessee Titans (2-4) in London. Jackson had a strong overseas debut but Tucker stole the spotlight by going 6-for-6 on field goals. The Ravens got plenty of chunk plays on offense and a 70-yard punt return by Devin Duvernay but several of their drives stalled deep in Tennessee territory. Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill limped off after the third quarter, replaced by Malik Willis.

Washington Commanders 24–16 Atlanta FalconsSam Howell threw three short passes for touchdowns, Washington intercepted Desmond Ridder three times and the Commanders snapped a three-game losing streak. Howell shook off five sacks to complete 14 of 23 passes for 151 yards in a close-to-the-vest passing game. But it was the defense that sealed this one for the Commanders. Kendall Fuller, Benjamin St-Juste and Jamin Davis had the interceptions against Ridder, the last two helping preserve the victory that moved Washington to 3-3 on the season. The Falcons fall to 3-3.
