I understood pal Sitaram Yechury for 46 years, because the SFI’s 3rd all-India conference at Patna in Feb 1979. The conference chose a five-member group consisting of Yechury and I to develop the SFI’s headquarters in Delhi. All of us had actually battled, inside and outside the prison, versus Indira Gandhi’s oppressive guideline throughout Emergency. As trainees’ union chairman of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sitaram was especially significant. He led a demonstration march to Gandhi’s home requiring her resignation as JNU chancellor after she declined to give up the post in spite of losing the 1977 basic elections. The image of Gandhi listening calmly to the trainee union’s resolution checked out by a perky Sitaram is memorable.
