If a masala film does not make you whistle, does not send an electric shock to your feet and does not force you to hoot, then it is not a true masala film. Perhaps the masala in it is raw and not cooked properly. The purpose of watching ‘Singham Again’, which became the Avengers moment of Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe, is that on the occasion of festival, one should keep aside the mind and logic and just enjoy.
The trailer of Ajay Devgan starrer ‘Singham Again’ was promising action, drama, star cast and all kinds of explosive moments on the big screen. But was Rohit Shetty able to deliver the killer fun as per his promise? The answer to this question is a bit complicated.
What is the story?
The story of ‘Singham Again’ starts from Kashmir, where Bajirao Singham has ‘erased all traces of terrorism’. The film tells that Singham’s force has reformed the youth who have become militants and made them a part of the force. Singham is attacked during this advertisement of Kashmir Tourism. But Singham not only survives the attack but also catches the attacker who is none other than Umar Hafiz (Jackie Shroff).

What I don’t understand here is which fact is more shocking – seeing Jackie riding a bike with great enthusiasm at this age or the arrest of a character considered terrifying in the previous cop universe films right from the beginning?
Umar has told Singham that there is someone who is more dangerous than him and he is coming. What is known is that he will come from Tamil Nadu. By now you have also seen Ravi Kishan who has become a minister and a new squad has been formed to counter terrorism across the country, whose name is ‘Shiva Squad’. There are ‘Singham’ officers from every area in this squad. So the responsibility of handling the threat coming from Tamil Nadu is given to Lady Singham alias Shakti Shetty. He gets a small success, but a big failure.
Here for the first time you see the film’s villain ‘Danger Lanka’ (Arjun Kapoor). He enters Shakti Shetty’s police station and kills 15 policemen. However, the way he carries out this crime will remind you of many South films. Shakti Shetty could not stop this attack on her police station because her phone was not working. These are typical Rohit Shetty problems, which exist in every one of his films.
The film starts sinking after 40 minutes
The characters display heroism, but their opportunity to display heroism is created by some extremely stupid mistake of their own. Not receiving someone’s call is not a big deal, but the kind of hero these characters of Rohit Cop Universe are, does it suit them to do so?
The problem that starts appearing from here will continue to be visible to you. You must have seen in the trailer that Danger Lanka kidnaps Singham’s wife Avni (Kareena Kapoor). Actually, Avni is working on a project Ramayana, some footage of which has been deleted, and she herself is in the field with a camera to shoot it again. In view of the danger, police officers are also with him. But madam ordered tea, the policeman went to get it, and then they were kidnapped.
Another officer, Satya (Tiger Shroff), trained by Singham, also tries to stop Danger Lanka’s actions. Satya’s fight etc. is not like any ordinary policeman, because he is a Kalaripayattu master. The ashram where he grew up is in the same forest through which Danger Lanka is taking Avni. Satya also succeeds once, but then Danger Lanka itself attacks his ashram. And this Kalaripayattu master does not know this basic thing that the villain’s goons can come from the back gate of the house also.
Avni also gets injured and Lanka takes her away again. Satya’s work is about to be completed when Singham sir arrives. Who had reached the place a little while ago by helicopter, where Satya had saved Avni. He also came to know that Avni is now at Satya’s ashram. But he did not reach the ashram directly by helicopter. All these mistakes make Singham sir a human being, otherwise Rohit had made him a god by adding praises etc. for him in Sanskrit.
For the first 40 minutes it seemed that ‘Singham Again’ was probably really going to be better than the previous films. But whatever happens after this, it slows down the pace of the entire narrative. As soon as the second half starts, the story starts mentioning the old players of the cop universe, Simba (Ranveer Singh) and Suryavanshi (Akshay Kumar). And then the way Simba has been left in the screenplay, it becomes irritating after a certain limit.
Overload of stunts in Lanka incident
Danger Lanka has taken Singham’s wife to Sri Lanka to take revenge. And now the film constitution says that Singham should enter Sri Lanka with his entire team. And you have seen this much in the trailer itself that this is what will happen. The interesting thing is that whatever you have seen in the trailer, are also the most exciting parts of the film. Otherwise the fight sequences and stunts are just to show how far the human mind can go without logic. Akshay Kumar also comes at the other end of the same distance. Watch the trailer of ‘Singham Again’:
‘Singham Again’ only delivers moments within Ajay Devgan’s lead hero. Fans of other characters will also not find much exciting in the film. Rohit Shetty has tried so hard to give ‘Singham Again’ reference to the story of Ramayana that his pressure is visible on the entire film. In any frame if there is someone else with Ajay If he is a star, then there will definitely be an inter-cut with some scene from Ramayana. This continues throughout the film and truly spoils the entire flow of the film.
Rohit Shetty has definitely designed many action sequences very well but he should have done this with a story. Without emotion, without drama, without original ideas, the whole thing seems very mechanical. Ajay Devgan’s acting definitely keeps the attention and this will be called his most powerful performance in the role of Singham.
Be it Kareena, Deepika and Ranveer Singh, all the other actors are seen trying hard to live up to their director’s vision. But the concept of the film has become so overloaded that it starts looking boring in the second half. So much is happening on the screen, explosions are happening, cars are flying, people are doing stunts but you are just watching like a stone without any reaction.
Logic should not be searched for in masala films, this is absolutely true. But a masala film must try to appear a little intelligent in its own logic. In an attempt to make another grand film, ‘Singham Again’ seems to be a film that has failed to handle all the elements by adding too many elements to it.
Be it Ajay Devgan or Ranveer Singh or Akshay Kumar, there are very few funny moments even for the fans of the stars. Even Salman Khan’s cameo in ‘Singham Again’ is cooler than all his cameo roles.
