A frightening report of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense Affairs has come out. In which it is said that between 2017 and 2022, 34 Air Force aircraft crashed. These include fighter jets, training crafts and helicopters. It has been told in this report that most of the accidents have happened due to human mistake. After that due to technical glitches.

Most of the accidents occurred in 2018-19 and 2021-22. This is very worrying. These also include high-profile accidents, one of which occurred in December 2021. In this, Mi-17V5 helicopter crashed, in which Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat was martyred.

According to the report, out of 34 accidents, 19 occurred due to human error of the aircrew. 9 accidents due to technical glitches. The remaining accidents are due to damage caused by bird collisions or unknown objects.

12 people including former CDS Bipin Rawat died due to unwanted changes in the weather. In which the pilot could not understand correct navigation. He could not manage Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT).

MiG-21 fighter jets have been the most involved in accidents. Many pilots have been martyred because of these. Many people have died. Apart from technical glitches, this also includes human error. Apart from this, Mi-17, JugR, Sukhoi-30 and Kiran Tanner jets are included.

What are the security safeguards?

The Defense Ministry told the parliamentary committee that several steps have been taken to prevent these accidents. The main ones include reviewing operational protocols, training and maintenance practices. Fully following the advice given in the inquiry report.

Reduction in accidents

The report states that in 2000-2005, there were 0.93 accidents out of every 10 thousand flights. Which decreased to only 0.27 in 2017-22. If we talk about the year 2020-24, the accidents have reduced to 0.20. This shows that safety protocols are being followed completely.
