Alastair Newton, CEO, Alavan Business Advisory, says of all the uncertainties that surround Donald Trump, the one thing on which he has been extraordinarily consistent is tariffication of imports into the US. Though we don’t have to take him literally at his words, i.e., 60% tariffs on China, and 10% to 20% on all other imports, we should at least expect some fairly rapid moves on tariffs because contrary to what a lot of the commentaries are expecting, we are likely to tariffs first talk later from trump rather than using the threat of tariffs to bring people to the table. He is going to impose tariffs first, and ratchet them back in return for concessions.
The big event is Trump taking oath as president of the United States once again and this time, the entire scenario is different from what it was when compared with Trump regime 1.0 – but the rhetoric definitely is similar.
