Wests Tigers superstar recruit Jarome Luai sent for emergency scans

Star Wests Tigers recruit Jarome Luai has been sent for emergency scans following a leg injury at training.

It has been reported that Luai suffered the injury at the end of last week during the team’s physically and mentally draining army style boot camp in Queensland.

Luai is now under an injury cloud ahead of what was pencilled in as his club debut in the trials.

The Tigers are sweating on the results of the scans and will take no risks with the 28-year-old.

Luai has already been ordered to take a break from training until more is known about the injury.

The four-time premiership-winner — who crossed from the Panthers at the end of last year — has already impressed at his new club.

He has been made co-captain of the Tigers and his mental and physical toughness was on show during the three-day army camp at Moreton Bay, north of Brisbane.

The Tigers take on the Bulldogs at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in their first trial game on February 16.

It has been reported that the Tigers are confident Luai will be right for Round 1 when they face Newcastle on March 7.

Luai was a Tigers fan when he was a child.

After he was named captain of his beloved club, he said it was an an honour he did not “take lightly”.

He has played 131 NRL games, but has never skippered a game at NRL level, although he is Samoa’s incumbent captain at international level.

“Api (Koroisau) has set an incredible standard as a leader and I’m excited to work alongside him again and contribute to building something special here,” Luai said.

Koroisau has excelled since making his own move from Penrith for the 2023 season and has been the Tigers’ sole captain for the last two seasons.

He has comfortably been the club’s best player in that time despite consecutive wooden spoons, earning selection in the 2023 NSW State of Origin team before a series-ending jaw injury.

Koroisau and Luai won the 2021 and 2022 premierships with the Panthers, the first of four consecutive titles for the side.
