Former Queensland minister Gordon Nuttall dies aged 71

Former Queensland State Labor minister Gordon Nuttall has died at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.

Nuttall was once a senior figure in the Beattie Government, holding key portfolios including Health, Industrial Relations, and Primary Industries.

He served as the Member for Sandgate from 1992 until 2006.

But his career ended in disgrace when he became one of the most high-profile politicians in Queensland’s history to be jailed for corruption.

In 2009, Nuttall was found guilty of receiving more than $360,000 in secret payments from businessmen while serving as a minister.

He was convicted of corruption and perjury and sentenced to 14 years behind bars.

Before the corruption charges, Nuttall was forced to resign as health minister over his handling of the Bundaberg Hospital scandal, where patients were harmed under the care of surgeon Jayant Patel.

Nuttall was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer in 2023 and had been living quietly in the coastal town of Woodgate since his release.
