A day after US President Donald Trump announced
25 per cent tariffs on India, the US Department of State has sanctioned at least six Indian companies for allegedly engaging in the trade of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products. The department said that the move is part of a sweeping action against 20 global entities.

The decision is also seen as part of Washington’s ongoing efforts to tighten economic pressure on Tehran. The sanctions that were announced on Wednesday alleged that 20 entities, including Indian firms, “knowingly conducted significant transactions” involving the purchase and marketing of Iranian petroleum products.

The State Department argued that the actions violated US sanctions on Iran. “The Iranian regime continues to fuel conflict in the Middle East to fund its destabilising activities,” the department said in a
statement. “Today, the United States is taking action to stem the flow of revenue that the regime uses to support terrorism abroad, as well as to oppress its people,” it added.
