The name of the post of head of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is ‘Sarsanghchalak’. The founder of the union, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, became the first Sarsanghchalak. After him, Guru Golwalkar, Madhukar Dattatreya Deoras, Rajju Bhaiya, Prof. Sudarshan and currently Mohan Bhagwat Sarsanghchalak are. However, for some time, Laxman Vasudev Paranaye was also given this responsibility.
Usually, the second major post in the Sangh is considered to be of Sarkaryavah (General Secretary) and there is an election for appointment every three years. Presently Datratreya Hosbale holds this post. But it has been a tradition about Sarsanghchalak that keeping in mind the advice of senior officials, etc., Sarsanghchalak has been choosing his successor. When the election of Sarsanghchalak was held before the Sangh, neither was discussed with him, neither he was already told nor asked. Rather, senior officials of the Sangh had announced their name by consulting each other.
When Dr. Hedgewar was shocked to hear his name as ‘Sarsanghchalak’
The Sangh was established in 1925 on the day of Vijayadashami. But for the next four years, no post like Sarsanghchalak came into existence. Nana Palkar, who wrote the biography of Dr. Hedgewar, has written in this regard that in the month of October 1929, there was a discussion of preparing a big meeting in the Sangh, to get it done in Nagpur. Then Dr. Hedgewar felt that the meeting of loyal, determined workers is more important. So on 19 October 1929, he sent a letter to the union operators of all the states and requested them to come to Nagpur for a meeting on November 9, 10. He also wrote to them that those who are determined for our purpose can also come.

When all the campaigners, union drivers and senior officials, volunteers gathered at one place on the first day, it was felt that an administrative system was also needed, and a head is also needed to lead it. It was interesting that Dr. Hedgewar was kept away from these discussions. Vishwanath Rao Kelkar, Balaji Huddar, Appaji Joshi, Krishnarao Moharir, Tatyaji Kalikar, Bapurao Muthal, Babasaheb Kolte and Martand Rao Jog etc. senior officials participated in this discussion.
The next day, a joint program of volunteers of Nagpur took place with all of them, for this the place was selected. This place was going to join the history of the Sangh for a second time because Dr. Hedgewar also started the first branch of the Sangh here.
At the time when Dr. Hedgewar was standing near the saffron flag, all the people were standing near the entrance, suddenly the union of Wardha, Appa Ji Joshi said in a loud voice, Sarsanghchalak Pranam Ek .. Two .. Two. This kind of salutation is usually performed in the Sangh, which the volunteers consider their guru. As soon as one said, everyone placed the right hand on their chest in such a way that only the thumb chest and the palms should be towards the ground. As soon as two said, the head bowed down and three came to normal as soon as they said. Dr. Hedgewar was standing on Avak. Here Appaji Joshi gave information about the decisions taken in the meeting held yesterday, how the administrative system of the Sangh is being created, which will be on the top of which will be Sarsanghchalak, Dr. Hedgewar has been selected as Sarsanghchalak first.

Doctor Hedgewar was angry at making himself Sarsanghchalak
After that Vishwanath Rao Kelkar gave his impressive address. Although Dr. Hedgewar remained silent at that time, he later expressed his displeasure to Appaji Joshi. Especially the way ‘Sarsanghchalak Pranam’ was organized in his honor. But Appaji Joshi explained the need to him that a formal head was needed to run the organization smoothly and everything else went on in excitement. He also said that if you tell you first, you would not have agreed.
However, apart from Sarsanghchalak, two more important posts were announced on that day and the names of two senior volunteers were announced on that too. When Balaji Huddar was elected to the post of Sarkaryavah, Martandrao Jog was elected as Sarasena, although the post later disappeared from the main executive of the Sangh. But Sarsanghchalak and Sarkaryavah are still considered the highest positions in the Sangh and their associated organizations.
