The City of Ottawa is looking at joining a growing number of municipalities in Ontario and across Canada that are taking doctor recruitment into their own hands amid a worsening primary-care shortage.

The city’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee will consider a 10-point strategy to bring more primary caregivers to Ottawa on Oct. 14.

The proposed primary care strategy recommends hiring a recruitment and retention ambassador for family doctors and nurse practitioners, pushing the province to remove barriers to doctors locating in or joining clinics in the city and helping candidates find and apply for primary-care jobs in Ottawa. The city is also looking at streamlining its policies and employee benefits that require consultation with primary-care providers.

The report notes that municipalities throughout Ontario and across Canada are taking action to improve outcomes for their communities, “recognizing the family doctor shortage is nearing a crisis.”
