Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August this year. In a conversation with Bombay Times, he reflects on life beyond the crease.

Excerpts:As a sportsperson, you know whenthe time is right’Retirement was not an impulsive decision for the 37-year-old. “Having dedicated my entire life to the game, it obviously wasn’t an easy call, but as a sportsperson, you know when the time is right. With the new domestic season approaching, I felt it was the right time to allow younger players to step up, gain valuable experience and make their mark. That’s when I knew I had to move on,” he shares.

Pujara recently joined hands with PHorce Club that aims to popularise Pickleball in India.

Haven’t felt the urge to get back into intense training’Ask him about life ahead, and he says, “It’s been good so far. I finally have the time to be with my family, especially my daughter, and I’m really enjoying that. I haven’t felt the urge to get back into intense training, but yes, I do maintain my fitness routines and continue to live a healthy lifestyle.”

I’m not rushing into anything’So, will his new innings include commentary or coaching? Pujara shares, “For now, I just want to spend time with my family, travel a little and experience aspects of life that took a backseat during my playing days. My parents made immense sacrifices, my wife managed everything at home so I could focus entirely on cricket, and my daughter has kept me grounded, reminding me to appreciate the little things. For all that they have done, this new phase of life gives me the chance to give back in the only way I can, by being more present with them and spending quality time together.

That apart, I have recently dabbled in some media work and enjoyed it, so maybe I’ll explore that further. I’m not rushing into anything. I’ll take it as it comes.”
