A tight-knit community is mourning a life taken too soon after a devastating house fire.

The 13-year-old girl died when fire ripped through her family home in Lawnton, a suburb of Moreton Bay north of Brisbane, on Sunday morning.

A man and a woman in their 30s and two other teenagers escaped with severe burns. All four remain in a critical condition.

Police are looking at whether an e-scooter might be to blame.

“The fire brigade came around, they were quickly in there and the next minute the whole place just exploded,” neighbour John McWha said.

“There were people you could see trying to help but the flames were just horrendous.”

The two-storey brick home was completely gutted with its roof caved in. The street was closed in both directions for most of the day as authorities tried to piece together what caused the fire and whether an electric vehicle was to blame.

“There are some vehicles, an e-scooter and perhaps and e-bike, but that’s still forming part of our investigations,” Detective Senior Sergeant Joseph Zitny said.

Queensland premier David Crisafulli extended his condolences to the distraught family and community.

“It’s incredibly tragic and it involves some young people and that is heartbreaking,” he said.
