Sheffield Wednesday has been handed an additional six-point deduction by the English Football League after multiple breaches of financial regulations. The latest punishment leaves the team 27 points away from Championship safety.
Former chairman Dejphon Chansiri has also been barred from owning or directing any EFL side for three years. According to BBC Radio Sheffield, the new penalty is connected to unpaid wages for players in March, May, and June, as well as further missed payments to staff and HMRC.
The club had already been docked 12 points in October following its decision to enter administration. With the new ruling, Wednesday now sits on minus 10 points, placing them far behind 21st-placed Swansea.
While investigations into the current campaign continue, league officials have said they do not intend to impose more points deductions at this stage.

A statement released on the club’s website confirmed the immediate six-point deduction and Chansiri’s three-year exclusion. It also noted that matters under review by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit remain ongoing for incidents prior to administration.
The EFL added that it is not pushing for additional sporting penalties as part of those inquiries. Discussions between the league and the club also continue over the fee restriction in place, which currently runs until the end of the winter 2027 window.
This issue is expected to be settled when Wednesday completes their exit from administration. Since the club’s administration began, Chansiri’s near-decade tenure has effectively come to a close.

Administrators continue efforts to select a preferred buyer for the club and had previously targeted Friday as the day to identify one. It is understood that at least one potential bidder has toured Hillsborough, with interest reportedly coming from parties willing to offer above the “25p in the pound” mark needed to avoid further sanctions.
Supporters received encouraging news: the next league campaign will start with Wednesday returning to zero points, giving the future owners a clean foundation. Additionally, contrary to earlier indications, the fee restriction will now conclude in January rather than 2027.
This shift gives any incoming ownership the freedom to immediately prepare a recruitment strategy for next summer, vital for the expected rebuild in League One. After a turbulent chapter, today’s developments offer a measure of optimism for fans hoping for stability and revival.
