‘Elections will be held on time’, Mohammad Yunus’ announcement amid uproar in Bangladesh

Chief Advisor to Bangladesh Government, Professor Mohammad Yunus, while talking to US Special Envoy Sergio Gore, assured to hold general elections on time on February 12. The issues of trade, tariffs, democratic change and the assassination of Osman Hadi came up in the discussion. Yunus said that the government is fully prepared for fair and peaceful elections.

Professor Mohammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Bangladesh Government, reiterated on Monday that the general elections will be held on time on February 12. He said that the people of the country are eager to exercise their voting rights, which were snatched away by the previous dictatorial government.

Conversation with US Special Envoy
Professor Yunus said this during a telephone conversation with Sergio Gore, America’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia. This conversation took place at around 7:30 pm Dhaka time and lasted for about half an hour.

What were the main issues of the talks?
The discussion included issues like trade and tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and America, upcoming general elections, the process of democratic change in the country and the murder of young political activist Sharif Usman Hadi.

The US special envoy also discussed the massive funeral of martyr Osman Hadi. On this, the Chief Advisor expressed his views by describing the situation as serious.

Professor Yunus said that supporters of the ousted dictatorial regime are allegedly spending millions of dollars to disrupt the election process and their absconding leader is inciting violence. However, he said that the interim government is fully prepared to deal with every challenge.
