An aerial view of the property where Dezi Freeman was shot dead by police this morning. Dezi Freeman, aka Desmond Filby, is dead, seven months after he shot dead two police officers executing a search warrant at his family’s bus near the north-east town of Porepunkah. Police have confirmed they killed a man at a property in north-east Victoria this morning as part of the operation to locate Freeman. “We believe it is Freeman but we have to go through a formal identification process,” said Chief Commissioner Mike Bush. Bush provided an update at 11am, saying the officers who conducted today’s operation acted with “textbook professionalism”. The police operation in which Freeman died took place near Walwa, two hours north-east of Porepunkah on the Victorian side of the Murray River. Freeman is believed to have been hiding in a container on a property and emerged, possibly wrapped in a doona, to shoot at officers. Bush confirmed there were several hours of negotiating between Freeman and police before the shooting, but would only say that the fugitive was armed. Bush did not confirm whether Freeman shot at officers.
