The Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to come under review by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) once the 2026 season concludes. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia acknowledged that the rule has been a topic of debate for the past couple of years.
Introduced in 2023, the rule allows teams to substitute one player during a match, giving them the flexibility to strengthen either their batting or bowling depending on the situation. This tactical option has enabled sides to effectively field extra specialist batters or bowlers, significantly influencing match dynamics.
As a result, the balance between bat and ball has shifted, especially on flatter pitches. High-scoring games have become more common, with totals exceeding 250 now seen more frequently. Earlier this season, Punjab Kings pulled off a record chase against Delhi Capitals, successfully hunting down 264 runs in under 19 overs-the highest chase in T20 cricket history. In another instance, Sunrisers Hyderabad chased 244 against Mumbai Indians in just 18.4 overs.

However, the rule has drawn criticism for reducing the importance of all-rounders, as teams can now rely more on specialists. Some observers also fear it could negatively affect the India national cricket team, since such substitutions are not permitted in international cricket.
Despite the concerns, Saikia maintained that there has been no formal objection from franchises. He pointed out that the league continues to produce a wide variety of matches—from low-scoring contests to high-scoring thrillers—keeping fans engaged.
He also clarified that any decision regarding the rule will only be taken after the current season concludes on May 31. According to him, while discussions exist in the media, no official request has been made by teams to reconsider the rule so far.
