Financier-Turned-PM Plans Radical Cure for Moldova’s Ills

Moldova’s President, Maia Sandu, rang Vasile Tofan in October last year to try to convince him to leave the private equity company Horizon Capital and become the country’s next prime minister. Tofan declined.

The businessman and economist Alexandru Munteanu took the job instead. When he then resigned on July 3, Sandu offered Tofan the job again. This time, he said yes.

“This time, I gave it a great deal of thought,” Tofan told media outlet Pro TV shortly after parliament approved his government lineup on Tuesday, with backing coming from Sandu’s ruling Action and Solidarity Party, PAS.

“My initial response was immediate: if the governing party believed I could serve my country, I was determined to do so,” he declared.
