The health unit says only bottled water or water brought to a hard boil for one minute should be used for consumption, infant feeding or food and ice preparation.

The health unit’s boil-water advisory page says water must be heated to a rolling boil for at least one minute to kill all disease-causing microorganisms prior to use. The water should then be cooled and stored in a clean, covered container and refrigerated.

Boiled water should be used for people and pets to drink. It must also be used for making ice cubes, preparing foods and beverages, washing fruits and vegetables, and brushing teeth.

Mechanical dishwashers can be used as long as chlorinated detergent is used. Handwashing should be done with hot tap water but final rinsing should be done with boiled or bottle water or disinfected tap water, which includes a bleach solution of four teaspoons of unscented household bleach to every 10 litres of lukewarm water. Dishes should be left to dry.

Adults can shower in both water as long as it is not swallowed.

Young children, immunocompromised, as well as individuals with skin lesions or open wounds should take sponge baths with boiled water.

The health unit says the boil-water advisory will remain in place until corrective actions have been taken by Union Water Supply.
