It’s now a bit after 10.30pm in Dallas, and a typically lengthy oration from Trump has concluded seven hours of speeches on day one of the first-ever Republican Midterm Convention.
The most memorable moment came with the president’s eyebrow-raising offer to reward American voters with $5000 each for voting Republican in the November elections – a cool $US1.3 trillion giveaway if all 280 million voting-age adults took it up.

AP Photo/Julio Cortez Trump also defended the war in Iran, made frequent jabs at “radical left lunatics”, and took the credit for cheaper US drugs, while complaining of getting no credit for building the White House ballroom he said other presidents have wanted for years.
He’s due to appear again tomorrow on the second and final night of the convention, when Vice President JD Vance is set to speak, but he has pledged not to go on for as long.
“I gave you a lot of material. I don’t have to do it twice,” Trump said as he wrapped up.
