Key Posts That’s all for today By Isabel McMillan

Thank you for reading the national news blog for today, Wednesday, October 28. This is where we will end the live updates.

Here’s a brief look back at some of the day’s biggest stories:

Inflation rose to 4.3 per cent in September following a surge in petrol prices and a rise in the cost of building homes, raising pressure on the Reserve Bank to lift interest rates next week. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said war in the Middle East was “turbocharging” the inflationary challenges faced by Australians, as the flow of oil and other key commodities came under severe pressure. Shadow treasurer Tim Wilson said the prime minister needed to consider sacking Chalmers as Australians grappled with another inflation rise.

The country’s fair work umpire has said the growth in the number of cases it is hearing has eased following legislative changes allowing it to streamline its unfair dismissal processes. In a Senate estimates hearing this afternoon, Fair Work Commission general manager Murray Furlong said growth in the commission’s caseload “appears to have moderated, possibly to a new normal”.

At the Greens leader’s National Press Club address, David Shoebridge was asked about fellow Greens senator Jordan Steele-John. Responding to questions from this masthead about whether the women at the heart of allegations made against Steele-John would be spoken to, Shoebridge said politics needed to be safe for women.

Woolworths chief executive Amanda Bardwell has called on Australians to be kind to store staff before the busiest trading period of the year and amid rising levels of threats and violence faced by retail workers. More than 7800 incidents of violence a year have been recorded across the Woolworths network, which Bardwell described as “totally unacceptable”.

And overseas, passengers on a luxury ship touring the world have been told their unexpected final stop will be Cambodia after the cruise company suspended operations, citing “extraordinary” fuel costs. Florida-based Villa Vie Residences’ 650-passenger ship Odyssey is now moored in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and the company “is working with residents to co-ordinate disembarkation and identify temporary living arrangements”, according to a statement. Thanks again for tuning in. We’ll be back tomorrow with your live news coverage.
