COVID-19: Iran orders soldiers to fight coronavirus outbreak as death toll rises to 77

Iran’s supreme leader put the Islamic Republic’s armed forces on alert on March 3 to help health authorities in combating the outbreak of the new coronavirus— the deadliest outside of China– that authorities state has killed 77 individuals.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s choice was announced after state media broadcast pictures of the 80- year-old leader planting a tree using non reusable gloves ahead of Iran’s upcoming arbor day, demonstrating how concern about the infection now rises to the top of the country’s Shia theocracy. Iranian media reported that 23 members of Parliament now had the virus, as did the head of the nation’s emergency services.
