His remarks have been condemned as unsafe by medical professionals and makers. Disinfectants are hazardous substances and can be dangerous if ingested, and even external direct exposure can be harmful to the skin, eyes and breathing system.
Mr Trump said on Friday that the remarks – made at a press conference one day earlier – were ironical and taken out of context.
