Navy wants to reinstate fired captain of coronavirus-hit carrier

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – In an extraordinary reversal, the U.S. Navy has recommended reinstating the fired captain of the coronavirus-hit warship Theodore Roosevelt, whose team hailed him as their hero for risking his job to secure their lives, officials said on Friday.

The Navy’s management made the suggestion to reinstate Captain Brett Crozier to Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday, simply 3 weeks after Crozier was relieved of command after the leak of a letter he wrote calling on the Navy for stronger measures to safeguard the crew, the authorities said, speaking on condition of privacy.

The Pentagon issued a declaration acknowledging Esper received the outcomes of the Navy’s preliminary questions into the Roosevelt event. It added that Esper wanted to evaluate a composed copy of the completed inquiry.

Recommending no decision loomed, the declaration said Esper then “intends to completely evaluate the report and will reunite with Navy leadership to go over next actions.” The Navy said in a statement “no final decisions have been made.”
