Centre jacks up fuel tax again, but no impact on consumers

NEW DELHI: The Centre on late Tuesday night raised excise duty on petrol and diesel, the second increase in a little over a month, aimed at soaking up the benefit of a sharp fall in crude prices in the last two months. But there will be no impact on consumers as the state-run oil companies have been asked to adjust the impact against their hefty margin.

Taxes on petrol have been raised by Rs 10 a litre and on diesel by Rs 13. Road and infrastructure cess on both fuels now stands at Rs 8 per litre, while the special additional excise as now stands at Rs 2 for a litre of petrol and Rs 5 for diesel.
