The PM likewise stated people who could not work from house needs to return to the office – but prevent public transport.
In an address to the country, Mr Johnson said this phase would also involve resuming shops – however he warned this would only happen if supported by science.
He stated these actions formed part of a “first sketch of a roadmap for reopening society”.
BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said that, while the coronavirus has begun to come under control, the PM’s careful announcement was “certainly not some sort of significant flinging of the doors open”.
Clarifying the conditions in which schools and stores would reopen, Mr Johnson stated: “Throughout this duration of the next two months we will be driven not by mere hope or financial requirement.
” We are going to be driven by the science, the data and public health.
” And I need to worry once again all of this is conditional, all of it depends on a series of big ifs.”
The PM described how the “R” number – the recreation rate of the virus – would be essential in choosing whether lockdown could be eased further.
Experts have said that keeping R listed below 1 – implying a single person with the infection passes it on to one other individual – is the concern.
” It depends on everybody – the entire country – to follow the recommendations, to observe social distancing, and to keep that R down,” he said.
