Wisconsin court ruling at center of political divide over U.S. reopening

PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (Reuters) – Wisconsin’s governor on Thursday forecasted confusion after the state supreme court overruled his sweeping stay-at-home order, sustaining a growing political divide over how and when to reopen the shattered U.S. economy.

The court’s decision, which found that Guv Tony Evers and a top state health authorities did not have the authority to unilaterally confine residents to their houses or bar them from working, marked the first time such coronavirus constraints had been overturned in the United States.

” I can’t imagine another state that remains in this predicament, where essentially mile by mile there might be various rules across all the state of Wisconsin,” Evers, a first-term Democrat, told a news conference.

In Port Washington, Wisconsin, hair stylist Linda Teichert said she was anxious to open her store but was waiting on clearer guidance from the state.

” I don’t understand what they desire me to do yet,” Teichert stated. “It’s too ambiguous. There’s insufficient info out there. I want to be prepared.”

Wisconsin’s leading health authorities, Andrea Palm, stated the supreme court choice in a claim brought by Republican lawmakers, “changes nothing about the science of this virus or the work we require to continue to do together to safely reopen Wisconsin.”

A Republican state senator, Tom Tiffany, required Palm’s resignation, blaming her for the economic fallout from the restrictions.

” 10s of thousands of people are having a hard time to look for joblessness in an attempt to endure the storm she triggered,” Tiffany said.
