WASHINGTON: Tens of thousands of Americans flocked to beaches, pools, parks, and bars/restaurants on Memorial Day weekend with little regard to social distancing even as the Trump administration banned entry of non-US citizens from Brazil and warned it would review traffic from other countries with high incidence of coronavirus infections.

Citing the growing number of Covid-19 cases in Brazil, which now has the second largest number of infections with more than 365,000 cases, the White House said the move was a “decisive action to protect our country,” even though the United States itself has more than four times the number with nearly 1.7 million cases and is closing in on 100,000 deaths, the highest in the world. Under new restrictions, travelers who visited Brazil two weeks before seeking entry will be denied entry to the US, but the ban will not apply to US nationals, green card holders, and their relatives.
