Hours prior to using up migrant workers issue, Supreme Court got stinging letter from senior attorneys

Hours prior to taking suo motu cognisance of “specific lapses” in government steps handling migrant employees, the Supreme Court received a stinging letter from 10 senior lawyers each from Delhi and Mumbai that was critical of its “self-effacing deference” to the government, “aversion” and “evident indifference” in the face of the “enormous humanitarian crisis”.

The senior lawyers, who include P. Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Prashant Bhushan, Indira Jaising, Vikas Singh, Iqbal Chavla, Navroz Seervai, said the way the Supreme Court picked to rely on the “dull assertions and patently inaccurate declarations” made by the Centre reminded them of how it functioned throughout the Emergency age “when detenues were delegated the tender grace of the executive with ‘Diamond brilliant, Diamond difficult hope” that something would be done”.
