Trump confirms plan to cut soldiers in Germany

Mr Trump has long grumbled that Nato members ought to invest more by themselves defence.

US President Donald Trump has confirmed strategies to withdraw 9,500 American soldiers from bases in Germany.

He accused Germany of being “overdue” in its payments to Nato, and stated he would stick to the strategy unless Berlin altered its course.

Mr Trump has long complained that European members of Nato must spend more by themselves defence.

Germany’s ambassador to the United States said United States troops were not there to safeguard Germany but protect transatlantic security.

Emily Haber added that Berlin had been notified of the plan.

Rumours of cuts were reported previously this month by US media, amid increasing tensions with its allies in the Europe’s North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) under Mr Trump.

Throughout a cabinet conference, Mr Trump stated: “So we’re securing Germany and they’re delinquent. That doesn’t make good sense. I said, we’re going to bring down the count to 25,000 soldiers.”
