Simpsons ends white actor voiceovers for minorities

Actor Hank Azaria, the voice of Indian character Apu, stated in January he was stepping down.

United States animated comedy series The Simpsons will no longer utilize white stars for the voices of characters from other ethnic backgrounds, the program’s manufacturers say.

The program, broadcast on Fox Network, has faced years of criticism over white star Hank Azaria’s voiceover of Indian-American character Apu.

Mr Azaria said earlier this year that he was stepping down from the role.

The entertainment industry has actually come under growing pressure to supply more chances for non-white entertainers.

Friday’s announcement is available in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests, which were stimulated by the death of African-American George Floyd in United States police custody on 25 May.
