The preliminary results of a clinical trial suggest a new treatment for Covid-19 considerably reduces the number of patients requiring intensive care, according to the UK business that established it.

The treatment from Southampton-based biotech Synairgen uses a protein called interferon beta which the body produces when it gets a viral infection.

The protein is breathed in directly into the lungs of patients with coronavirus, using a nebuliser, in the hope that it will promote an immune action.

The initial findings suggest the treatment cut the chances of a Covid-19 client in health center establishing severe illness – such as needing ventilation – by 79%.

Patients were two to three times more likely to recover to the point where everyday activities were not jeopardized by their disease, Synairgen claims.

It stated the trial likewise showed “very considerable” decreases in breathlessness among clients who received the treatment.

In addition, the average time patients spent in medical facility is said to have been decreased by a third, for those receiving the brand-new drug – below an average of nine days to six days.

The double-blind trial involved 101 volunteers who had actually been confessed for treatment at 9 UK hospitals for Covid-19 infections.

Half of the individuals were provided the drug, the other half got what is called a placebo – a non-active compound.

Unconfirmed results

Stock exchange rules suggest Synairgen is required to report the preliminary outcomes of the trial.

The outcomes have not been released in a peer-reviewed journal, nor has the full data been made available; so the BBC can not verify the claims produced the treatment.

However if the results are as the business says, it will be an extremely important step forward in the treatment of coronavirus infections.

The scientist in charge of the trial, Tom Wilkinson, says if the results are validated in larger research studies the new treatment will be “a video game changer”.

The trial was fairly small however the signal that the treatment benefits patients was uncommonly
