US puts on ice new foreign students who take on only online courses

WASHINGTON: Newly enrolled international students whose colleges and universities are operating entirely online this fall won’t be allowed to enter the US, the Trump administration notified on Friday, citing the coronavirus pandemic while putting a hex on foreign students heading to America.

The rule will however apply only to new students and not to those already in the U.S who are actively enrolled in American schools on or before March 9, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said, adding that “Newly enrolling students can come on valid visas if their schools certify they plan to take at least one course in person for the fall term.”

“Nonimmigrant students in new or initial status after March 9 will not be able to enter the US to enroll in a US school as a nonimmigrant student for the fall term to pursue a full course of study that is 100 percent online,” the agency said, advising university officials school officials not to issue a Form I-2
