Letter from the Editor: Highlighting racial disparities in mental healthcare

As a white individual living in the United Kingdom, I’ve been blind to the glaring racism that continues to occur all around us.

We remain in the 21 st century, and I have actually been setting about my day-to-day life using increased colored glasses. While bigotry should be a distant memory, the unfortunate truth is that it’s very much today.

In the United States, Black individuals are almost 5 times more likely to report being unjustly stopped by the police because of their race or ethnic background than white people.

Black individuals in the U.S. are likewise approximately 2.5 times most likely than white individuals to be killed by cops. This is stunning, and the unfortunate truth is that stats like these will come as no surprise to Black communities.

On a personal level, these past few weeks have actually made me recognize that I require to do far more to help address systemic racism. It starts with informing myself on the concerns that Black, Indigenous, and individuals of color (BIPOC) are dealing with every day.

As a health media business, we have to do more. We require to bring the issue of health injustice to the fore. We have actually overlooked to do this in the past, but it’s something we have actually vowed to address going forward.
