Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his views on the issue of ‘One Nation, One Election’ in ‘Agenda Aaj Tak’. This was his first media interaction after the Lok Sabha elections. Shah rejected allegations that the bill weakens the federal structure.

He said that ‘One Nation, One Election’ is not a new thing. In 1952, all the elections were held simultaneously. In 1957, albeit on different dates, the legislative assemblies of eight states were dissolved so that simultaneous elections could be held. After this, this process was adopted for the third time also.

Home Minister @AmitShah spoke on ‘One Nation, One Election’, said- “I am not fighting the elections for fun, I am fighting to inform the public about the true issue, I am fighting to make my party win.” And my party is going to win anyway, even if we are together, it will win… pic.twitter.com/BrpcWQCQHF

Shah said, ‘This process was stopped when former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru toppled the CPI(M) government in Kerala. After this, Indira Gandhi continued this trend on a large scale. In 1971, the Lok Sabha was dissolved prematurely just to win the elections. For this reason elections started being held at different times.

Shah also said that the perception that ‘One Nation, One Election’ will be beneficial for BJP is wrong. Giving an example, he said that in 2014 and 2019, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously in Odisha, but BJP lost there. In 2019, it got a huge mandate across the country, but the party had to face defeat in Andhra Pradesh.

Just hours before the Home Minister’s statement, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill. This bill is likely to be introduced next week in the current winter session of Parliament.

There is a proposal to add a new Article 82A in the Bill, which will help in holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all the state assemblies. Apart from this, there is also a proposal to amend Articles 83, 172 and 327.
