Six months after they discovered their names missing from the upgraded National Register of Citizens(NRC), more than 19 lakh individuals in Assam are anxiously awaiting their opportunity to be back in the list.
The last draft of the NRC released on August 31, 2019, had actually omitted 19,06,657 out of 3.3 crore candidates for lack of appropriate documents to develop that they have been living in Assam before March 25, 1971, the cut-off date for finding and deporting immigrants or illegal immigrants.
This date was recommended by the Assam Accord of August 1985, ending 6 years of a violent agitation for ejection of non-citizens.
