An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison along with additional penalties, according to her lawyer with the verdict open to appeal under Iranian law.
Iran sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to over seven more years in prison after she began a hunger strike, supporters said Sunday, as Tehran cracks down on all dissent following nationwide protests and the deaths of thousands at the hands of security forces.
“She has been sentenced to six years in prison for gathering and collusion to commit crimes,” lawyer Mostafa Nili told AFP, adding that she has also been barred from leaving the country for two years.

According to Nili, Mohammadi was additionally given a one-and-a-half-year prison term on charges related to propaganda activities and ordered into internal exile for two years in Khosf, a city in Iran’s eastern South Khorasan province.
Under Iranian law, multiple prison sentences are served concurrently.
Nili said he hoped that, given Mohammadi’s health conditions, she could be temporarily released on bail to undergo medical treatment. He added that the ruling is not final and can be challenged in a higher court.
