Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel has in recent days attacked Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon in a way that he could never have imagined.

“If Hezbollah has not understood the message, I promise you that it will understand the message soon,” he said, according to a statement from Netanyahu’s office.

There was heavy shelling between Israel and Lebanon on Sunday, with Israeli planes carrying out a massive bombardment in the south of Lebanon, which was the heaviest in the war that has been going on for the last one year. Whereas Hezbollah has claimed rocket attacks on military targets in the north of Israel.

‘The strike will continue’

The Israeli military said it struck about 290 targets on Saturday, including thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels, and said it would continue strikes against targets of the Iran-backed movement.

The attacks come less than 48 hours after an Israeli air strike targeting Hezbollah commanders killed at least 37 people in a city in the Lebanese capital, according to officials.

Hezbollah said Friday the attacks killed several people in the deadliest attack in the nearly year-long conflict with Israel. Those killed included 16 members, including senior leader Ibrahim Aqeel and another commander Ahmed Wahbi.

Pager and walkie-talkie burst

Friday’s strike sharply escalated the war and dealt another blow to Hezbollah after two days of attacks that destroyed pagers and walkie-talkies used by its members.

The death toll in these attacks has increased to 39 and more than 3,000 people have been injured. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in these attacks.
