Royal Challengers Bangalore, who won the IPL 2026 title, have suffered a setback before the next season. The team’s star batsman Tim David will not be able to play the first match of IPL 2027. IPL has suspended him for one match. This action has been taken after an incident that took place during the IPL 2026 final played against Gujarat Titans, when David threw an ice bag towards umpire Nitin Menon.
In a statement issued by the IPL on Monday, it was said that Tim David has been fined 50 percent of his match fee. Along with this, he has also been given two demerit points. The Australian batsman was found guilty of violating Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Under this rule, throwing cricket equipment or any other thing inappropriately towards a player, umpire, team official or any other person during a match is considered an offence.

This case pertains to the IPL 2026 final played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After the wicket fell in the 10th over of the first innings, Tim David threw an ice bag towards umpire Nitin Menon. IPL considered this as undisciplined behavior and later took action. Tim David has accepted his mistake. He also accepted the punishment given by match referee Javagal Srinath. For this reason, there was no need for any further hearing regarding the matter.
Understand the full mathematics of banning
Common cricket fans will have a question in their mind that why a straight match ban was imposed on this level of mistake? The reason for this is the rule of demerit points. Actually, this was Tim David’s third mistake in this entire season. Earlier, he had received one demerit point in match number 20 of the tournament. After this, he was given two more points in match number 54.
Now by including two points for this mistake in the final, his total demerit points have become five. According to the rules, as soon as a player completes five demerit points, he is automatically suspended for one match.
This punishment will directly impact the first match of IPL 2027. Under the strict rules, if Tim David remains a part of the Bengaluru team next year, he will not be available for selection in the first match. Not only this, even if he plays for another franchise, he will have to sit out the first match of that new team. While it is a big celebration for RCB to become champions, the ban on their main batsman has certainly made the start of the next season a bit dull.
