But there are many such holy and mysterious places in Tapobhoomi which attract tourists and devotees. One of these is Chandrashila. This is a famous peak situated just above Tunganath, the world’s highest Shiva temple. This place is included in the top list of many travelers coming to Uttarakhand. People believe that the view of this place is supernatural. However, the pundits of Tungnath temple are advising not to consider this place as a tourist spot.

The priest further said that Tungnath is the only place in the entire Panch Kedar on the banks of Ganga where offerings to the ancestors are made. Tung means highest and Nath means lord. That’s why people have great faith in this place.

Moon did penance in Chandrashila
The priest of Tunganath temple told the people that when Moon was cursed with tuberculosis, he got rid of this disease by doing penance by coming to Chandrashila. Now the question arises that why did Moon perform penance in Chandrashila only? On this the priest told that this Dham was the home of Mahadev in Satyayug. Mother Ganga and Chandradev himself sit on the peak of Mahadev.
It is described in the Kedar section of Skanda Purana that the Akash Kamini stream of Mother Ganga is the origin place on the peak of Tungnath Dham. Ravana Shila is also in front of Chandrashila. Here Ravana did penance and obtained divine weapons. According to Ravana Sahinta, when Lord Rama killed Ravana, he was accused of killing a Brahma. That’s why Lord Ram first performed penance in Devprayag. When he did not get complete salvation, Ram attained salvation in this place in the form of Narayana.
