This year, Dashami Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha is starting on 25th May 2026 at 04:30 am. At the same time, this date will end the next day i.e. on 26 May 2026 at 05:10 am. According to the scriptures, due to Ravi Yoga occurring throughout the day on Udaya Tithi and 25th May, the great festival of Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated on 25th May 2026 (Monday) only.

Why is this festival celebrated?
According to religious stories, before incarnating on earth, Mother Ganga used to reside in the Kamandal of Lord Brahma. King Bhagiratha performed rigorous penance for years for the peace and salvation of the souls of his ancestors. Pleased with his penance, Mother Ganga accepted to come to earth. Due to the efforts of King Bhagiratha, this holy day is also known as Ganga Dussehra or Bhagirathi Jayanti.

Freedom from ten types of sins
The word Dussehra means destroyer of ten sins. It is believed that by taking a dip in the river Ganga on the day of Ganga Dussehra, 10 types of sins of a person (3 somatic i.e. physical, 4 verbal i.e. speech and 3 mental sins) are completely destroyed. If you cannot go to river Ganga, then you can take bath at home by mixing some Ganga water in bathing water.

Ganga Dussehra puja method and importance of donation
On this day, wake up early in the morning and take bath and meditate on Mother Ganga. ‘Om Namah Shivayai Narayani Dashaharayai Gangayai Namah’ Chant the mantra. After this, offer incense, lamp, flowers and naivedya to Mother Ganga. Donating on the day of Ganga Dussehra has special significance. On this day, giving cold water or sherbet to passers-by, donating Sattu, Matka (pitcher), fan, clothes and food is considered extremely auspicious and virtuous.
