Criticising ‘meddling’, Beijing states HK security laws will not hurt investors

HONG KONG (Reuters) – China’s foreign ministry branch in Hong Kong hit back on Saturday at “meddling” countries and said proposed national security laws would not hurt the interests of foreign financiers in the city.

The security legislation, which could see Chinese intelligence firms set up bases in Hong Kong, has actually sent out chills through the business and diplomatic neighborhoods.

U.S. federal government officials have stated the legislation would end the Chinese-ruled city’s autonomy and would be bad for both Hong Kong’s and China’s economies. They said it could jeopardise the territory’s unique status in U.S. law, which has assisted it maintain its position as an international financial centre.
