David Crosby on Live Music’s Uncertain Future– and Why He Hasn’t Given Up on Reuniting CSNY

David Crosby had a hectic 2020 lined up, with three different trips, significant programs with Phil Lesh, Joe Walsh, and Jason Isbell, and a lot of brand-new music to make. At the minute, Crosby has no concept if any of that is going to take place. “I don’t desire to be sitting at house, male,” Crosby states on the phone from his Santa Ynez, California, house.
Crosby is doing his finest to take advantage of his hiatus from the roadway. He’s cleaned out 3 lockers. He made a “first-class breakfast,” and captured up on music ranging from Miles Davis to Bulgarian folk. Crosby is injuring economically today, but he acknowledges it’s nothing compared with young artists. “For artists, it’s a fucking problem,” he says.
Before he started self-isolating, Crosby sent out off an email to Neil Young, making the case for a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young reunion. The group hasn’t visited given that 2006, and the reasons that are examined in the 2019 documentary Remember My Name. Here, Crosby discusses the possibility of the band playing once again, the trouble of being an artist during the pandemic, imagination, and why he hasn’t given up on our country yet.

The minute you do have an idea, however, you have to go for it. Don’t go out to lunch or something. A lot of us see it as a challenge, to surf it, to get on top of it, and manage our destiny.
Does this chapter advise you of anything else you’ve lived through? It reminds me of a couple of different durations. It reminds me of the Vietnam War, attempting to get individuals to pay attention to us and stating we should not exist. It reminds me of the civil-rights era, and how disappointed we were with people being racist. And it advises me, unfortunately, of Kent State. There are guys at the top of our government today who would a lot love it to be a police state, and they admire it. Our president, those are the only guys he likes– totalitarians. The situation is really bad. We have an outright idiot running the nation, and now we have actually run into a genuine serious issue. And he’s not capable. He’s not capable of handling breakfast, let alone the issues of the country. That’s all really hard. I think it’s real hard times, male. I have two real-positive, delighted songs I wish to put out right now, and I’m trying to encourage the record company individuals to let me do it, because I believe these are truly down times.
The livestreams seem to be really altering music.People sitting in their living spaces on an iPhone, playing you tunes– it’s so fucking real. Benmont Tench did an actually nice one.
Have you seen any of Neil’s? They’re incredible. No, I didn’t. Well, he’s generally truly good. What can I say? I haven’t liked his writing lately so much. I keep waiting for a tune that truly makes me feel something. He set the bar really high, man: “Helpless”; “Nation Woman”; “Old Man”; “A Man Requirements a Maid”; “Cortez.” It’s Neil. He wrote a great deal of excellent songs. So it’s tough for him. Everyone is always going to compare his work now to his operate in the past. Same thing everyone does to everyone. And it’s hard to keep a very high level. I’ve been really fortunate– I’m dealing with other individuals who are tremendously skilled.

Part of the vibrant that’s going on now with musicians is that we came into it having actually currently lost half of our earnings. They do not pay us for records anymore, no matter what anyone tells you. And they’re making billions of dollars.
I do not understand if you understand this, man, but what occurred is, the men who developed the technology went to the main record companies and they stated, “Hey, think of a world where there’s no physical object. No records, no CDs, no covers, no packages, no shipping, no distribution companies, no cover, no lyrics, no absolutely nothing. You press a button, you send it, and you collect the money.” And the record companies went, “Holy shit. What do we have to do to get that?” And the guys who created the innovation stated, “All you have to do is alter the pay structure. Instead of paying the artists so much money that they’re all abundant rock stars, pay us that money.” And the record company stated, “Yeah, we might do that.” And this is the kicker: “Provide us a piece of your business.” And they did. I don’t know if this is true, man, but here’s what I heard: Those 3 primary record companies are currently splitting a remove of the streaming business that resembles $17 million or $19 million a day. I ‘d like to understand if it holds true. And the money goes right around the artists, we don’t get any of it..

I understand a lot of them who are monstrously talented, and they can’t fucking earn a living. They can’t make any money off of CDs.
What performances have you lost?Well, it’s grim, man. I lost Phil Lesh’s birthday? I was actually eagerly anticipating that. I was looking forward to playing with him, and we had intend on doing “Laughing” and “Cowboy Movie” and things that we cut together. It was a pretty exciting weekend appearing like a real thrill, a bunch of actually great gamers coming in that regard Phil and believe he’s a really terrific musician. That’s gone.

I got three trips this year because it’s the only time I can make my living, support my family, keep my house. I got one in August-September and then I got another one in November-December. The one in November-December is really killer.
We’re gon na do a Nashville song circle, where we go out and all three of us remain out there the entire night and trade songs. If I lose all three of them, well, then I’m going to lose my home. I won’t be able to make the rent.
Would you want to go back on the roadway if you could?Fuck no! I’m questioning how that’s gon na work up until there’s a treatment.
It’s frightening to think of all the baby-boomer artists going back on the road.I’m a book case, male, I’m 78 years old. I’m a transplant, so I have a reduced body immune system. I’m a diabetic, type 2, for 30 years. I’m absolutely the center of the group. I stress over it.
What music have you been turning to?I’m listening to stuff that’s really more meditative. If you turn on the TELEVISION, it’s all frenzied, everything’s frenzied, and they’re doing that on purpose due to the fact that it offers products. I listen to, well, Michael Hedges. Miles Davis, especially Sketches[of Spain] I listen to Snarky Pup, a truly excellent jazz band. I listen to Weather forecast. Heavy Weather is still one of my favorite records on earth. I have actually been listening to the new Sarah Jarosz record, which is stunningly fucking great, and which follows on the heels of I’m With Her doing stunningly good things. I still listen to Joni a lot because I believe she was the very best of us. I listen to [jazz guitarist] David Gilmore. The first record by the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra, called Music From Bulgaria. I still listen to that record. It changed my life. The best vocal work I have actually ever heard anybody do.

I’ll tell you what I’ve been listening to this morning, man. Somebody in Italy got hundreds of individuals to sing “Helplessly Hoping,” and aggregated them together. It’s so emotional. Look it up on the internet, guy. I really destroyed. That’s what I’ve been listening to today.

I chose I was going to figure out if I might make hash browns or not. I took a potato and I cleaned it and I grated it, and then I put it in the pan with some butter and I made hash browns. Made myself a superior breakfast.
And after that I try to write, but writing isn’t a t
