Today, millions of Americans went to the polls.

It was one of the biggest election days of the year, second only to the presidential election on November 4.

Here’s your really simple guide to what happened on Super Tuesday.

1. Who won and what happened?

Joe Biden.

He claimed victories in nine states (and will likely win a 10th) and defied the expectation that Bernie Sanders had sewn up the race to be Donald Trump’s opponent.

Americans in 14 states — Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia — voted.

It was the day when the single largest group of Americans made a choice for the person they think is best to take on Mr Trump.

Sanders only won in Colorado, Utah, Vermont and importantly, California.
