The US has announced the cancellation of the Sanctions Waiver from Iran’s strategic Chabahar port. The decision will be applicable from 29 September 2025 and has been described as part of the strategy of Washington’s “Maximum Pressure” campaign.
This discount allowed India and other countries to work on Chabahar, so that they did not come under the help of American sanctions. But now its removal can have a big impact on India’s strategic and economic plans.

India signed a 10 -year agreement with Iran in May 2024, under which the Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) took over Shahid Beheshti Terminal. This was the first time India managed a foreign port. Earlier, the 2016 agreement was renewed every year.

This port is very important for India
Chabahar Port is very important for India as it bypasses Pakistan and provides direct trade routes to Afghanistan and Central Asia. India proposed this project in 2003 to strengthen regional connectivity through the International North-South Transport Corridor.
India has also made strategic supplies many times through this port. In 2023, the help of 20,000 tonnes of wheat was sent to Afghanistan and in 2021 Iran was transported by environmentally friendly pesticides.

The US State Department said that this step has been taken to disrupt the Iranian rule and its illegal financial assistance to its military activities. However, after this, the challenge has arisen in front of India that if companies are involved in activities related to Chabahar Port, then they can be vulnerable to American sanctions.
