Delhi-NCR weather: IMD sounds yellow alert as rain, thunderstorms set to lash Delhi after capital records warmest January in 7 years. Check Noida, Gurugram forecast

Delhi and its neighbouring areas (NCR) woke up to light rain on Friday morning with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of more showers due to an active western disturbance. The IMD has warned of generally cloudy skies with light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph during early to forenoon hours in the national capital. On Thursday, Delhi witnessed its warmest January day in seven years, with the Safdarjung observatory recording a maximum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius. According to the weather agency, temperatures are likely to get colder again over the next 24 hours and an ongoing western disturbance is expected to bring cloudy skies and rainfall. The maximum temperature is expected to fall to 19 degrees Celsius tomorrow, with the minimum temperature set to settle at 12 degrees, the weather office said.

Rain, thunderstorms in Delhi today The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rain in Delhi today. One or two spells of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely during the early morning to forenoon hours on Friday. Another spell of very light to light rain is expected towards the afternoon or evening, along with shallow fog during morning hours.

Thursday had been unusually warm, with the mercury soaring to 27.1°C, about seven degrees above normal. The high temperature in Delhi was attributed to persistent warm easterly winds and clear skies, which increased sunshine hours. “Westerly winds are cold, while easterly winds are warm during this time of the year,” a weather official told TOI.

Noida is likely to see partly cloudy skies on Friday with one or two spells of rain or thunderstorms, the weather office said. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Similar weather conditions are expected in Gurugram on January 23, with partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Delhi temperature likely to drop According to the IMD, as multiple spells of rain expected on Friday, the temperature is likely to drop. Officials said the maximum temperature is forecast to fall to 18-20°C on Friday and further to 16-18°C on Saturday. The rainy spells, accompanied by cloud cover, are also expected to bring down Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) to the poor category on Friday and to moderate by Saturday, if rainfall occurs.
