Victoria has widened restrictions to cover some regional residents after its daily coronavirus numbers saw Australia record its deadliest day in the pandemic, as well as its most new infections in a 24-hour period.
Premier Daniel Andrews gave a lengthy press conference of more than an hour to give an update on the situation. These are the key things you might have missed.
These are Victoria’s latest coronavirus numbers at a glance:
- 723 new cases
- 13 new fatalities — 10 believed to be connected to aged care
- 19,921 tests were conducted yesterday
- 312 people are in hospital, including 34 in intensive care
The first big announcement is that restrictions are being introduced in regional Victoria
From midnight tonight, residents in parts of regional Victoria will not be able to visit other households or have people visit them, and that includes weddings and funerals at homes.
The locations affected include:
- Greater Geelong
- Surf Coast
- Moorabool
- Golden Plains
- Colac-Otway
- Borough of Queenscliffe
Mr Andrews described the broad area affected as “Geelong plus”.
